About Dr. Dana Swain

Even as a young child I had a spiritual bent. It started at 8 years old, when I had an experience of being unconditionally loved by infinite love itself. I saw with absolute clarity that this was true for every single person on the planet, we just aren’t usually aware of it.

I studied spiritual philosophies and meditation throughout my teens and twenties. Then in my early twenties I experienced a kundalini awakening. It was by turns blissful and scary as hell. And I had no one to talk to about it. I thought maybe I was going crazy.

Thankfully I found teachers who guided me. Still, I kept my spiritual heart hidden from view. I had a successful career in high-tech start-ups that I liked, but didn’t love. I longed for my spiritual life to be part of what I did in the world.

Then I moved overseas with my husband for 14 years. We lived in Africa, Brazil, and Indonesia. It was a wonderful, challenging time where I learned an incredible amount about other cultures and perspectives. I loved it, and yet I still felt something was missing.

That sense of missing something expanded into a full-blown mid-life crisis. I had an amazing, interesting life, and I felt completely without purpose. I wasn’t following my bliss, as the writer and mythologist Joseph Campbell would say.

I did some very deep inward contemplation about what was important to me, along with getting clear about my gifts. I had always been a dreamer. I don’t mean dreams of what I wanted in life (that too), but actual dreaming—very powerful, vivid dreams. I had been a fan of depth psychologist C.G. Jung for years. I resonated with three of his concepts: the importance of dreams; how archetypes play an invisible role in our lives; his theory of alchemy as a way of understanding the often challenging transformations we go through in life. So my life journey got back on track as I got my PhD in Jungian depth psychology.

My coach training was a way of bringing my studies to life and sharing that knowledge with others. My purpose is to help other people wake up to their purpose, to their fullest and deepest selves, and to have that self be expressed in the world. We can be spiritual as well as grounded and practical. We can tend to our core selves and at the same time set goals and achieve great things.

I want that for you. If you want that for yourself, I'm here for you.

When the Light Breaks Through offers a contemporary and practical look at kundalini, combining historical, academic, and scientific research to help readers better understand kundalini. In my first book, I address a wide range of perspectives—from the biological to the psychological to the spiritual.
